Sura 44
Aya 33
33
وَآتَيناهُم مِنَ الآياتِ ما فيهِ بَلاءٌ مُبينٌ

Ali Unal

And (as a favor) We granted them many signs (miracles), in which there was a manifest trial.1
  • God’s treatment of a people is for their good and is directed toward their education. This sometimes requires rewards and sometimes punishment. Both reward and punishment contain favors and tribulations which require gratitude and patience. The Children of Israel had been oppressed by the dynasty of the Pharaohs for many years, and this had caused them to develop many complexes and an attitude of slavery. So, in order that they should arouse themselves to freedom and evolve the character needed to live as a free people according to God’s commandments, God favored them with many miracles, both in Egypt and after the Exodus. However, as every favor and extraordinary blessing does, those miracles also contained a trial. Just as every miracle undeniably convinces people of the Divine truths proclaimed by the Prophets, denial of them brings ruinous punishment.
