56وَأَقيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكاةَ وَأَطيعُوا الرَّسولَ لَعَلَّكُم تُرحَمونَMuhammad AsadHence, [O believers,] be constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues,1 and pay heed unto the Apostle, so that you might be graced with God's mercy.The specific mention of the "purifying dues" (az-zakah) in this context is meant to stress the element of unselfishness as an integral aspect of true faith.
