Chapter 73

Enwrappedal-Muzzammil ( المزمل )

20 verses • revealed at Meccan

»The surah that opens by addressing the mantled Prophet as the Enwrapped Messenger. It takes its name from the word “wrapped in mantle” (muzzammil) in verse 1. The surah describes how God relaxed the early regime of devotion first imposed on the Prophet (verse 1 ff.) to prepare him for the weighty message. The Prophet is urged to be patient (verse 10 ff.), told of the punishment that awaits the disbelievers in Hell (verse 12 ff.), and reminded of the punishment that befell Pharaoh in this life (verse 15 ff.).«

The surah is also known as Bundled up, Enfolded, Folded in Garments, The Enwrapped Messenger, The Enwrapped One, The Mantled One, Wrapped in Mantle

  • Muzzammil: Some Commentators understand by this, “properly dressed for prayer”, or “folded” in a sheet, as one renouncing the vanities of this world. Muzzammil is one of the titles of our Prophet. But there is a deeper mystic meaning in this and the address “Thou wrapped up” of the next Sūra. Human nature requires warm garments and wrappings to protect the body from cold or heat or rain. But in the spiritual world these wrappings are useless; the soul must stand bare and open before God, in the silence of the night, but not too austerely, as the following verses show.
