ما جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِرَجُلٍ مِن قَلبَينِ في جَوفِهِ ۚ وَما جَعَلَ أَزواجَكُمُ اللّائي تُظاهِرونَ مِنهُنَّ أُمَّهاتِكُم ۚ وَما جَعَلَ أَدعِياءَكُم أَبناءَكُم ۚ ذٰلِكُم قَولُكُم بِأَفواهِكُم ۖ وَاللَّهُ يَقولُ الحَقَّ وَهُوَ يَهدِي السَّبيلَ

God has never put two hearts within one man’s body. He does not regard the wives whom you divorce as your mothers,¹ nor your adopted sons as your own sons. These are mere words which you utter with your mouths: but God declares the truth and gives guidance to the right path.

An allusion to the formula: ‘Be to me as my mother’s back’, accepted among pagan Arabs as a declaration of divorce.
