ذٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّم حُرُماتِ اللَّهِ فَهُوَ خَيرٌ لَهُ عِندَ رَبِّهِ ۗ وَأُحِلَّت لَكُمُ الأَنعامُ إِلّا ما يُتلىٰ عَلَيكُم ۖ فَاجتَنِبُوا الرِّجسَ مِنَ الأَوثانِ وَاجتَنِبوا قَولَ الزّورِ

All this [is ordained by God]; and if one honours God's sacred commandments, it will redound to his own good in his Sustainer's sight. And all [kinds of] cattle have been made lawful to you [for sacrifice and food], save what is mentioned to you [as forbidden].¹ Shun, then, [all that God has forbidden and, most of all,] the loathsome evil of idolatrous beliefs and practices;² and shun every word that is untrue,

See the first paragraph of 5:3. Once again, the Qur'an stresses the principle that everything that has not been explicitly forbidden is per se lawful.
The term awthan (lit., "idols") denotes not merely actual, concrete images of false deities but also, in its widest sense, everything that is associated with false beliefs and practices or with a tendency to "worship" false values: hence the subsequent injunction to shun "every word that is untrue".
