Sura 21
Aya 13
13
لا تَركُضوا وَارجِعوا إِلىٰ ما أُترِفتُم فيهِ وَمَساكِنِكُم لَعَلَّكُم تُسأَلونَ

Muhammad Asad

[and at the same time they seemed to hear a scornful voice]: "Do not try to flee, but return to all that [once] gave you pleasure and corrupted your whole being.1 and [return] to your homes, so that you might be called to account [for what you have done]!2
  • For an explanation of the phrase ma utriftum fihi, see surah 11, note 147.
  • The Qur'an does not say whose words these are, but the tenor of this passage indicates, I believe, that it is the scornful, self-accusing voice of the sinners' own conscience: hence my interpolation, between brackets, at the beginning of this verse.
