Sura 1
Aya 7
7
صِراطَ الَّذينَ أَنعَمتَ عَلَيهِم غَيرِ المَغضوبِ عَلَيهِم وَلَا الضّالّينَ

The path of those whom You have favored;1 Not of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who are astray.2
  • Those whom Allah has favored are said in another verse of Qur’ān to be: “…the Prophets, the ṣiddiqīn (highest saints), the martyrs and the virtuous…..” [4:69]
  • Those against whom Allah is wrathful are those who have actively opposed His. Messengers knowingly, like the Jews of Madīnah who recognized the prophethood of Muhammad yet rejected him. As for those who are astray, they are those who intend well, but have deviated from the straight path, but are not in active conflict with Allah and His Messenger. The usual example for this group is the Christians, who accepted the message of Jesus—unlike the Jews who rejected it—but overstepped the limits and worshipped Jesus as God.
