18 Preface ثُمَّ جَعَلناكَ عَلىٰ شَريعَةٍ مِنَ الأَمرِ فَاتَّبِعها وَلا تَتَّبِع أَهواءَ الَّذينَ لا يَعلَمونَYusuf AliThen We put thee on the (right) Way1 of Religion: so follow thou that (Way), and follow not the desires of those who know not. Shari'ah is best translated the “right Way of Religion”, which is wider than the mere formal rites and legal provisions, which mostly came in the Medīna period, long after this Meccan verse had been revealed.
