12وَإِذ يَقولُ المُنافِقونَ وَالَّذينَ في قُلوبِهِم مَرَضٌ ما وَعَدَنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسولُهُ إِلّا غُرورًاAli UnalAnd (remember) when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease (at just that point in the situation) were saying: “God and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion.”1As the Qur’ān promised in several of its verses that Islam would be victorious and prevail over all other faiths, the Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, also made similar promises from the very first day of his message. Even during the digging of the trench, he said: “I have been given the keys to Persia. God is the Greatest. I have been given the keys to Byzantium” (Ibn Hishām, 3:235–236; al-Bidāyah, 4: 123).
