23فَأَجاءَهَا المَخاضُ إِلىٰ جِذعِ النَّخلَةِ قالَت يا لَيتَني مِتُّ قَبلَ هٰذا وَكُنتُ نَسيًا مَنسِيًّاMuhammad AsadAnd [when] the throes of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree,1 she exclaimed: "Oh, would that I had died ere this, and had become a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten!"I.e., compelling her to cling to it for support: thus stressing the natural, normal circumstances of this childbirth, attended - as is the case with all women - by severe labour pains.
