Sura 4
Aya 46
46

N. J. Dawood

Some Jews take words out of their context and say:1 ‘We hear, but disobey. May you be bereft of hearing! Rā‘inā!’ — thus distorting the phrase with their tongues and reviling the true faith. But if they said: ‘We hear and obey: hear us and Unzurnā,’2 it would be better and more proper for them. God has cursed them in their unbelief. They have no faith, except a few of them.
  • To Muḥammad
  • The words mean ‘Listen to us’ and ‘Look upon us’ respectively; but in Judaeo-Arabic the sound of the first conveys the sense, ‘Our evil one’. Arabian Jews used the expression as a derisive pun.
