30 Preface وَوَهَبنا لِداوودَ سُلَيمانَ ۚ نِعمَ العَبدُ ۖ إِنَّهُ أَوّابٌYusuf AliTo David We gave Solomon (for a son),-1 How excellent in Our service! Ever did he turn (to Us)! The greatest in this life have yet need of this spiritual blessing: without it all worldly good is futile. Referring back to the story of David, we are now introduced to Solomon, who was a great king but greater still because he served God and turned to Him. The Qur-ān, unlike the Old Testament, represents Solomon as a righteous king, not as an idolater, doing “evil in the sight of the Lord” (1 Kings, 11:6).
