75 Preface ۞ أَفَتَطمَعونَ أَن يُؤمِنوا لَكُم وَقَد كانَ فَريقٌ مِنهُم يَسمَعونَ كَلامَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفونَهُ مِن بَعدِ ما عَقَلوهُ وَهُم يَعلَمونَAli Quli QaraiAre you then eager that they should believe you,1 though a part of them would hear the word of Allah and then they would distort it2 after they had understood it, and they knew [what they were doing]? This is an address to the muslims who were eager that the Jews should embrace Islam and follow the Prophet’s teachings.Cf. 4:46; 5:13, 41, for this characteristic of the Jews.
