56قُلِ ادعُوا الَّذينَ زَعَمتُم مِن دونِهِ فَلا يَملِكونَ كَشفَ الضُّرِّ عَنكُم وَلا تَحويلًاMuhammad AsadSAY:1 "Call upon those [beings] whom you imagine [to be endowed with divine powers] beside Him2and [you will find that] they have it not in their power to remove any affliction from you, or to shift it [elsewhere]."3Sc., "to those who believe in the existence of any divine power apart from God".As the sequence shows, this relates to the worship of saints or angels.I.e., to transfer it onto themselves: obviously an allusion to the Christian doctrine of "vicarious atonement".
