58وَإِذا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِالأُنثىٰ ظَلَّ وَجهُهُ مُسوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظيمٌMuhammad Asadfor, whenever any of them is given the glad tiding of [the birth of] a girl,1 his face darkens, and he is filled with suppressed anger,I.e., a tiding that should have been regarded as a happy one, since the sex of the child ought to make no difference to parental love.
