The al-Quran project is even better on the inside: here we take a look under the hood of al-quran.info. To keep it brief, the basics, settings and shortcuts is explained and explored, enjoy!

Overview

The al-Quran project lets you browser, navigate and search all the translation text and Qur’an text available online. Here’s how it works:

1. Go to the project home page at al-quran.info.
2. Select one of the 114 listed chapters (sūra) of the Qur’an.
3. …and you’re done!

The first time you visit the project page all the option fields are automatically sets to default values. The menu page centralizes all the options available for you to customize as you see fit!

When you personalize the settings on the menu page, your changes will take effect immediately after clicking the submit button: this will bring you back to the initial state where you now find yourself navigating the resources as customized. If you furthermore have enabled cookies, your changes will be stored locally and remembered for next time you visit the project page (a cookie is a small file on your computer that saves Internet settings).

Improve Your Browser Experience

Menu > Browser

Click over the chapter index to access a drop-down menu, which lists all 114 chapters (sūra) of the Qur’an. This enables access to the optional verse index drop-down menu, where you can select a specific verse (aya) for the chosen chapter. When finished selecting which part of the Qur’an you would like to browser, click the submit button and you will find yourself navigating the text you desired to browser.

By default, the chapter display name is set to “Translation”; use the display name field to change between “Translation”, “Transliteration” and original “Arabic” as you see fit.

URL

The project URL is the web address at which your current browser state is located. When navigating the Quran text and translations it includes five separate parts:

The parts after the number sign identify which chapter and verse you currently are navigation as separated by a colon – e.g. the above illustrated URL ( al-quran.info/#7:12 ) displays chapter 7 verse 12. Here’s how it works:

1. Click on the address bar and move the pointer (cursor) to right after the number sign.
2. Change chapter number and verse number as located on each side of the colon.
3. …and you’re done!

Make sure you’ve included all the parts required as illustrated or else you will automatically be redirected to the project home page.

Quran and Translation text

Menu > Translation

Click on the select box to select or search for maximum five translations.

Translations are either written from the right of the page continuing to the left (i.e. right-to-left, RTL) or from the left of the page and continuing to the right (i.e. left-to-right, LTR). As of RTL scripts often have a smaller corpus size (i.e. x-height), it is possible to set the font size independents for both RTL og LTR translations.

When finished selecting and resizing one or more translations, click the submit button to apply changes.

Menu > Quran

First time visitors will by default see the original Arabic al-Qur’an text displayed (enabled). If you don’t want the al-Qur’an text showing up, just click the disable button to hide the text.

The al-Qur’an text is available in different formats:

1. Quran Simple: text in Imlaei script
2. Quran Simple (clean): text without special demonstration of Ikhfas and Idghams.
3. Quran Simple (enhanced): similar to previous text but with a minimal number of diacritics and symbols.
4. Quran Simple (minimal): similar to previous text but without any diacritics or symbols.
5. Quran Uthmani: text similar to Medina Mushaf.
6. Quran Uthmani (minimal): similar to previous text but with a minimal number of diacritics and symbols.

All the different formats include by default pause marks, sajdah signs (۩) and rub al-hizb signs (۞).

You are furthermore able to change between different al-Qur’an fonts:

1. Default: Traditional Arabic (OS dependent)
2. Hindi Naskh: Yameen Dehlvi style (embedded)
3. Madina Mushaf: Similar to Madina Mushaf (embedded)
4. Scheherazade: Modern Arabic unicode typesetting font (embedded)
5. Uthman Taha Naskh: Mushaf Al-Madina style (embedded)

Search

Dependent on which texts you’re navigating, the list of texts available to search differ. Choose the one you would like to search in and type a word or phrase in the search box and press the search button.

If the word or phrase isn’t found in the text it can be due to a different spelling (e.g. ‘zakat’ or ‘zakaat’) or didactic marks as e.g. ‘Raʿinā’. Try making a broader search (e.g. ‘alms’) or including basic didactic marks (e.g. ‘ra'ina’).

If you see the message “too many results for… please narrow your search”, then your query returned more than 300 hits and can’t display. Try narrowing the search by replacing the search word or including a longer phrase.
