Chapter 9

Repentanceal-Tawbah ( التوبة )

»The surah that announces for all time that God granted to His prophet, to the Emigrant and Helping Companions, and to three errant believers Repentance; and that offers the same opportunity to the unbelievers and the hypocrites, provided they forever renounce hostility, idolatry, and duplicity; and which further demonstrates the faithfulness of this offer in God’s decree of amnesty for the truly repentant idolaters who fought the believers at a place called Ḥunayn. It is named after “repentance” (tawbah) mentioned in verse 3 and verse 5. The surah opens by giving notice of the severance of the treaty with the idolaters because they had broken it, but the bulk of the surah deals with preparations and recruitment for the expedition to Tabūk (year 9/631). The hypocrites and those who stayed behind and failed to support the Prophet Muḥammad are all censured. This is the only surah not to begin with the formula Basmalah.«

بَراءَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسولِهِ إِلَى الَّذينَ عاهَدتُم مِنَ المُشرِكينَ

(این، اعلام) بیزاری خداوند و پیغمبرش از مشرکانی است که شما (مؤمنان توسّط فرستاده خدا، فرمانده کلّ قوا) با آنان پیمان بسته‌اید (و ایشان آن را به دلخواه شکسته‌اند و به دشمنان اسلام پیوسته‌اند. به آنان چهار ماه فرصت داده می‌شود که در این فاصله یا به اسلام بگروند، یا سرزمین عربستان را ترک کنند، و یا این که آماده‌ی نبرد با مسلمانان شوند). 1
  • «بَرَآءَةٌ»: بیزاری. مراد اعلام مقاطعه و ترک معاهده است. این سوره را (بَرَاءَة) نامگذاری کرده‌اند به خاطر این که آغاز آن بدین واژه است. توبه هم گفته‌اند چون از توبه زیاد سخن رفته است (نگا: آیه 117 به بعد). فاضحه نیز نامیده‌اند چرا که منافقان را رسوا نموده است (نگا: آیه 49 به بعد). از آنجا که این سوره با بیزاری و خشم خدا از مشرکان آغاز شده است و در آن از اجازه جنگ با ایشان سخن رفته است (نگا: آیه 5 و 28) عبارت «بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِیمِ» که نشانه صلح و دوستی و بیانگر رحمانیّت و رحیمیّت خدا است در ابتدای آن نیامده است. (بَرَآءَة) خبر مبتدای محذوف و تقدیر چنین است: (هذِهِ بَرَآءَةٌ). یا مبتدا است و خبر آن (إِلَی الَّذِینَ عَاهَدْتُمْ). در این صورت مثل این است که بگوئیم: مِن فُلانٍ إِلی فُلانٍ.
