Chapter 75

Resurrectional-Qiyāmah ( القيامة )

40 verses • revealed at Meccan

»The surah that opens with the emphatic oath of the Divine One swearing by the looming day of Resurrection. It takes its name from verse 1, which mentions the Day of Resurrection. The surah dealing with the Day of Resurrection and man’s denial of that Day. God’s power is convincingly described in several vignettes (verse 3 ff., verse 26 ff. and verse 34 ff.). The third paragraph instructs the Prophet on appropriate reception of the revelation (verse 16 ff.), and thereby serves to emphasize that the Quran is indeed God’s word.«

The surah is also known as Day of Resurrection, The Rising

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

Muhammad Asad: In The Name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace:

1
لا أُقسِمُ بِيَومِ القِيامَةِ

Muhammad Asad

REVEALED during the first third of the Mecca period, this surah is devoted almost entirely (with the exception of the parenthetic passage in verses 16-19) to the concept of resurrection, on which its traditional "title" is based. In The Name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace:
NAY! I call to witness the Day of Resurrection!1
  • By "calling it to witness", i.e., by speaking of the Day of Resurrection as if it had already occurred, the above phrase is meant to convey the certainty its coming.
