Chapter 71

NoahNūḥ ( نوح )

28 verses • revealed at Meccan

»That surah that opens with the story of the ancient Prophet Noah, the unrelenting Messenger of Resolve, and his obstinately unbelieving people. It is named after Noah (Nūḥ) whose account is related in the surah and further gives details of the life of Noah before the Flood, to encourage the Prophet and warn the disbelievers.«

Ali Unal: IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE ALL-MERCIFUL, THE ALL-COMPASSIONATE

1
إِنّا أَرسَلنا نوحًا إِلىٰ قَومِهِ أَن أَنذِر قَومَكَ مِن قَبلِ أَن يَأتِيَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ

Ali Unal

From the early years of the Revelation of the Qur’an in Makkah, this sūrah of 28 verses takes its name from the word Nūh (Noah). It records how the Prophet Noah, upon him be peace, conveyed God’s Message to his people, and how harshly they reacted against it. The sūrah ends with Noah’s appeal to God after ages of harshness, derision and persecution endured at the hands of his people.
We sent Noah as Messenger to his people (and commanded him): “Warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them.”
