Sura 5
Aya 4
4

Muhammad Asad

They will ask thee as to what is lawful to them. Say: "Lawful to you are all the good things of life.1 And as for those hunting animals2 which you train by imparting to them something of the knowledge that God has imparted to yourselves - eat of what they seize for you, but mention God's name over it and remain conscious of God: verily, God is swift in reckoning.
  • The implication is, firstly, that what has been forbidden does not belong to the category of "the good things of life" (at-tayyibat), and, secondly, that all that has not been expressly forbidden is allowed. It is to be noted that the Qur'an forbids only those things or actions which are injurious to man physically, morally or socially.
  • Lit., "such of the trained beasts of chase" (min al-jawarih mukallibin). The term mukailib signifies "trained like a [hunting) dog", and is applied to every animal used for hunting - a hound, a falcon, a cheetah, etc.
