40وَإِن ما نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعضَ الَّذي نَعِدُهُم أَو نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِنَّما عَلَيكَ البَلاغُ وَعَلَينَا الحِسابُMuhammad AsadBUT WHETHER We let thee see [in thy lifetime, O Prophet, the fulfilment of] some of what We have promised them,1 or whether We cause thee to die [before its fulfilment] - thy duty is no more than to deliver the message; and the reckoning is Ours.I.e., the calamities which, according to the last paragraph of verse 31 above, are in store for "those who are bent on denying the truth" (alladhina kafaru).
